Key Design Principles

-
Safety Standards: All designs must comply with relevant safety standards, such as IEC 61439 series, and local wiring regulations. Only qualified electricians should perform the installation and wiring.
-
Component Organisation: A logical and functional layout is essential for efficiency and maintenance.
-
Sufficient Space: The enclosure must be adequately sized to accommodate all components, allow for proper cable management, and prevent heat build-up.
-
Clear Labelling: Wires, terminals, and components must be clearly labelled for easy identification and troubleshooting.

A standard panel layout includes the following elements, often mounted on DIN rails:
-
Main Switch/Isolator: An incomer switch to cut power to the entire switchboard.
-
RCBOs (Residual Current Breakers with Over-current protection): These devices combine the functions of an MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker, for overload and short-circuit protection) and an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker, for earth leakage protection) into a single unit, protecting individual circuits.
-
DIN Rails: Standardised metal strips used for mounting circuit breakers, terminal blocks, relays, and other control devices.
-
Earth and Neutral Bars: Dedicated terminal bars or blocks for secure earthing and neutral connections.
-
Terminal Blocks: Used to connect and organise external wiring securely onto the DIN rail.
-
Cable Management: Integrated trunking or wireways help to route and separate high and low voltage cables neatly and safely.
-
Enclosure: A protective box (metal or plastic) that houses all components, with a hinged or removable cover and sometimes a lockable door.

Wiring Considerations

-
RCBO Connections: The RCBO's "flying neutral lead" should connect directly to the neutral bar, while the circuit's neutral wire connects within the RCBO's terminal, preventing unwanted RCD tripping common in mixed RCD/MCB setups.
-
Busbars: Copper comb busbars can be used to link the live terminals of multiple RCBOs, providing an efficient and tidy power distribution solution.
-
Spare Capacity: It is good practice to include spare ways or poles in the initial design to allow for future circuit expansion.
-
Blanking Plates: Use proprietary pole fillers or blanking modules on any unused DIN rail space for safety and a professional finish.
